Fraud
and its Avoidance
Course Objectives
By the end of the
course the delegates will have:
- Come to understand the impacts of fraud on the financial services sector
and on society at large
- Become aware of the role of every individual in the prevention of fraud
- Developed a series of processes aimed at facilitating identification of
the fraudster
- Understood the importance of carrying out thorough due diligence, and
recognised a number of additional steps firms and individuals can take to
minimise the risk of loss
- Considered the factors involved in an asset tracing and recovery project
- Examined a number of recent instances of fraud impacting on financial and
other businesses which have resulted in costs to insurers
Course Format
After a brief
introductory session, the main part of the day revolves around a series of case
studies – examples of various recent frauds affecting different industries and
at different levels. Groups of participants are required to identify the
weaknesses that allowed the fraudulent activities to occur. Discussion
concerning the steps that may be taken, and the possible impacts of such steps
follows, and the day progresses to each participant developing a ‘fraud
avoidance checklist’ for future use.

- Introduction
- Personal experiences/knowledge of fraud
- Fraud – the statutory position and what this implies to the individual
and to the employer
- Case histories – five or six examples for group study, analysis,
presentation, feedback and criticism
- Insurance – the last line of defence
- Development of the ‘fraud avoidance checklist’ and a review of its
applicability to current responsibilities
- Reminder of the duties of the employee to themselves in connection with
suspicion of this crime
