Feedback and comments from recent course participants
In-house Accounting Course: January
2005
“I found the flow charts, glossary and summaries of great help and will refer to
them often. Thank you for the course, Martin. I have found it of immense
help and feel I have started to comprehend the basics, no doubt the real
learning will take place on a day to day basis – but I no longer feel
apprehensive about opening company accounts and reports – Thank you!
I also found that you are an interesting and highly informative lecturer, who
was able to put these accounts into a general marketplace perspective – that
really helps!”
In-house Credit Course: May 2004
“Thank you for sharing your invaluable knowledge and experience.”
“I thought that Martin was an excellent presenter
who made Credit – what could be a seemingly boring topic – very interesting.
I actually looked forward to coming in to the course each day! I would
recommend the course highly.”
Understanding Banking course - In-house for Mazars 15-16 September 2003
"Thank you for the two days. Your warmth, wit, charm and intellect (not to mention knowledge and experience of the industry) will I am sure be greeted with lavish feedback all round"
A Director’s Introduction to the City 28-29 April 2003
"Very educational, informative & enjoyable; I rate Martin very highly indeed"
"An excellent course enthusiastically delivered"
"Very entertaining: a dry subject that could have been v. boring. Jolly good!"
"Tour of City first class. Very useful reference notes"
"Exceptionally enthusiastic and interesting delivery"
Corporate Credit Analysis course 21-25 October 2002

"The course contents have given a clear insight into the course objectives. I feel that the objectives were pitched at the correct levels to support the group, and were explained to a standard that allowed clear reference back to our daily jobs".
"I liked the fact that you get a ‘general knowledge’ of the finance market, and I really enjoyed the work sessions…overall GREAT".
"The course met the objectives very well, and I feel I now have a better understanding of all the elements. Good alternation between Powerpoint, writing on the board and discussions".
Understanding Financial Statements 15 October 2002
‘This was a focused event. I found the entire presentation most valuable.’
"The instruction in critical assessment of financial data and explanation of technical financial terms were most useful".
"Well-presented course on a potentially ‘dry’ subject".
"It was most valuable to find that financial statements can be fun, that they are regulated works of fiction, and that they are compiled for a variety of purposes".
N M Rothschild & Sons: 5-9 August 2002 - Introduction
to the City

"Very lively, exciting guide to the City. Mr Russell is clearly a very experienced figure and knows everything (and everyone) there is to know about the City. He has endeavoured to pass on his knowledge with great charm and effectiveness. The tour round various City institutions has also made things interesting. The one thing that could be improved on is the time allocated to this section – the amount of information and the physical distances between locations was too great for a single day – but that probably could not be helped given how much stuff has to be put into just one week of training".
"Very interesting day. Good to hear about the markets from someone who has worked on both sides of them. Actually meeting the respective institutions help place each of them in context, and although this was a lot of information to take in during a relatively short period of time, I think I retained a lot".
"Excellent introduction to the city. Through his appearance and charisma as well as knowledge and enthusiasm for the city and financial markets, I have taken away a lot of valuable experiences".
"Excellent whistle-stop tour of city markets though some of the information seemed a bit irrelevant. Martin Russell a real character, and very knowledgeable".
"Martin Russell Esq was a splendid chap. I found his approach refreshing and his teaching was very good. Martin is a genuine enthusiast with respect to all aspects of ‘City life’ and his knowledge was clearly extensive. This day was the highlight of my week".
"Very informative day. Martin was very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful. A fun day out (!). Really good idea to put Investment Banking in context".
"Excellent, very interesting and useful. His enthusiasm rubbed off on us as well as his knowledge. This really helped with the bigger picture".
"Very enjoyable day. Furthermore, I feel it was both interesting and worthwhile. Martin was a very impressive and encouraging trainer".
In-house ‘commercial awareness’ course 17-19 July 2002
"Intensity and pace of delivery SPOT ON.
N.B. Thoroughly enjoyed the course; a bit apprehensive beforehand, but it has given me an appetite to cover more in this line of work".
N M Rothschild & Sons: 24-28 June 2002 - Introduction to the City
"Extremely informative, Martin’s knowledge of the City, it’s history and institutions is second to none"
"Excellent and greatly informative, a very good speaker""Martin was a great guy and made the day really fun and exciting, he was very knowledgeable"
"He found a great balance between instructing us on the workings of the city and explaining the histories behind it"
"The visits to Lloyds and the LME were very useful"
"Martin gave a superb whistle-stop tour of the city"
"Excellent in all respects"
"I gained an understanding of the city and financial services, made effective by visiting and seeing them first hand"
In-house Money Laundering Avoidance course May 2002

It is always good to be reminded about such subjects, especially given the regulatory culture.
The course was a useful reminder about what money laundering is. It was well managed – audience was encouraged to participate. (MLRO/Head of Compliance).
Allowed free discussion – good!
Martin made it clear that his job was not to provide solutions – this was backed up by the lecture/presentation style and information. The freedom for debate and discussion was very constructive.
Well delivered training session; made potentially ‘boring’ subject both interesting, and more importantly specific and meaningful to individuals.
The session was comprehensive, well presented and to the point.
IOD - 21 Sep 2001
"Very well-delivered and prepared"
"Amusing, ebullient style, which helped greatly to describe the ethos, atmosphere and culture of the City"
"Highly informative and enjoyable"
"AAA rating for the course. We found it an excellent overview of the workings of the City, refreshingly presented, and highly informative. Well done!"
N M Rothschild & Sons - 6 August 2001
"Great fun day; but more importantly, really helped capture the big picture of the city and the way the various institutions, firms, people interlace."
"Martin Russell was a fantastic speaker, eloquent and charismatic, with an ability to convey relatively complex concepts clearly, and an infectious enthusiasm that meant the day flew by."
"A day of inspiration for anyone entering the City"
"Martin Russell was quite possibly the most enthusiastic person I have ever met. His knowledge of the City is vast and detailed, and I found the day most useful in giving me an overview of how all the City institutions all interact with each other"
University of London Summer School - 20 June 2001
"An excellent and lively presentation"
"Excellent and captivating lecturer with very interactive style"
"Martin kept the class alive throughout the 3-hour presentation. He understood the topic and impacts his knowledge effectively on the presentations. Undoubtedly the best lecturer of the week."

"Brilliantly helpful, informative, practical; a great approach to the myriad of issues we studied in one
day"."Kept me interested all day – very entertaining".
'Getting to know the City' March 2001
'At last a quiet moment to write and thank you most sincerely
for the course you ran for me and colleagues last week.
You made it not only fascinating, but fun too! It certainly lifted the blinkers on my knowledge of the City, and whilst I cannot
promise you that I understood every detail, I can say that I now have a greater awareness of
what is going on beyond the confines of the Barbican!'
''Yesterday was excellent. You have a rare talent for anecdote and enthusiasm, and I'm delighted that at last I have got on one of your courses since all the ones you did for us I had to drop out of!"
'A Director's Introduction to the
City' March 2001
‘Many thanks for an excellent 2 days and the introduction to the city. It has been a great experience for a novice like myself & I thoroughly enjoyed it.’
A Director’s Introduction to the City: November 2000
Martin Russell was absolutely excellent in his deliverance.
I feel this course has helped me immensely to understand the markets and banking, and I feel sure this knowledge can only help the future of my business.
Capital Markets Workshop: 27 March 2000
Very good overview – easy to follow.
This workshop is excellent! Martin does a great job at teaching it.
Better than okay; almost perfect.
Excellent. It is my favorite course out of all of them, both because of the content and because of the instructor.
The lecturer was good at making the subject interesting, but at times I felt that too much prior knowledge of financial terminology was presupposed.
Very good.
Good speaker.
Was good in general – in some ways a lot to take in in one go. Could have been a bit slower, but then would not have covered all the ground!
Good overview of capital markets if a little rushed for such a complex area.
The topic is so vast you could spend all day on one tiny area.
Very useful, but could do with more courses like this.
Perhaps a bit longer would have been good to allow time for picking Martin’s brain.
Makes light of a potentially difficult subject. Focuses the mind and adds meaning to words and phrases that have only been partially understood (or misunderstood!)
Overall a very useful insight into the mind of a finance director and the reasoning underpinning structured finance transactions.
A Director’s Introduction to the City: 14-15 March 2000
Stimulating and informative.
Presented the course with pace, humour and rich content, all of which held my attention.
He was obviously mindful of the need for variation and constructed the days to include visits, videos, lectures and group participation.
An excellent overview and introduction to the City and its institutions. A useful picture of the interrelationships between markets, financial and advisory institutions – a picture of the City as a machine for making financial transactions.
A good explanation of how the City works from Lloyd’s /insurance to the banking and FT world.
Excellent overview of the history and culture of the City, and the various mechanics and ‘players’ involved. Excellent knowledge of the subject by the course leader. Given me a far better and deeper understanding of the City.
City Briefing & Training Course for British Trade International: 17-28 January 2000
"I am writing to thank you for the recent work you undertook for [us] running the above programme. I appreciate the vast amount of work that you put in to preparing the course and also in managing it on a day-to-day basis. It is my understanding that it was most successful, subject to perhaps a few adjustments regarding certain speakers and timing!
I very much hope that you will be able to work with us again in the future on similar projects."
Martin Russell should be used much more.
Very good spread of areas covered; excellent support from Martin Russell.
A Director’s Introduction to the City: 28-29 Oct 1999
Excellent course, it answered a variety of specific questions for me and gave good overview of city.
I very much enjoyed this course. It gave me a good insight into the workings of the city. Martin is very knowledgeable about his subject area.
A Director’s Introduction to the City: 15-16 June 1999
Extremely informative on a factual background level, but rather more designed to initiate further interest than address specific needs.
Will have given me confidence to talk to my treasury team about financial structures more.
A very interesting look at the past present and the future of the City.
Well-rounded perspective of the history, functioning and inter-relationships of the City.
Well worth the time.
A Director’s Introduction to the City: 30-31 March 1999
Outstanding gave me a better appreciation of the financial markets and link to the city.
Wonderful intro. to the City, its history and institutions.
Charismatic and knowledgeable leader.
Great mix of classroom and practical visits/experience.
"I thought I would drop you a short note to say thank you very much indeed for a most enjoyable course on Wednesday and Thursday of last week in the City of London. I enjoyed the course immensely and found your presentation to be easy to follow and interesting throughout and in particular I enjoyed the tours of the City and Institutions."
A Director’s Introduction to the City: 2-3 Dec 98
Very informative intro to the city – just what I needed.
An excellent course – opened my eyes to the key aspects of the City.
Very interesting; educational with a touch of fun & history. It has given me an insight into the City and helped my understanding.
